Hagia Sophia Museum (Church-Mosque) in Historical Peninsula, Istanbul


The former church of Hagia Sophia (Ayasofya) is one of the world's greatest architectural works and accepted as the 8th wonder of the world. It was built in 325 by the Emperor Constantine and reconstructed in 537.

After the conquest of Istanbul the church was turned into a mosque by Sultan Mehmet II and it is now used as a museum. Hagia Sophia is one of the best museums in Istanbul.


Hagia Sophia first constructed in 325 during the Emperor Constantine's will to move the capital of the Roman Empire to Istanbul.

After the damage due to an earthquake, in 360, Hagia Sophia is restored by Constantine the 2nd and called as "The Big Church". Later on it is started to be called as "Hagia Sophia". Due to many rebellions, Hagia Sophia restored again and again and after it is destroyed due to a big fire during the Nika rebellion in 532, it is reconstructed by the Emperor Justinianos in 5 years. And after the conquest of Istanbul in 1453, Hagia Sophia was converted to a mosque by Sultan Selim II.

Hagia Sophia museums hosts lots of history. The restoration works goes on all the time. The works on the upper gallery is exhibited at the Mosaics Gallery.
