Istanbul Gulhane Park and the Museum of the History of Science and Technology in Islam


Located in between the Sirkeci and Sultanahmet neighborhood of Fatih district, Gulhane Park (Rose Garden) is one of the most beautiful parks in Istanbul. "Gulhane" means "home of the rose" in Turkish. Entrance to Gulhane Park is free of charge. The park also is home to the Museum of the History of Science and Technology in Islam.




About the Gulhane Park


During the Byzantium period, Gulhane Park was home to some military warehouses and barracks. And during the Ottomans period, the park served as celebration and ceremony place, as well as a rosary shelter and main garden for the Topkapi Palace.

Gulhane Park was opened to public in 1912, and in 1955 a zoo was built in the Gulhane Park. Afterwards the zoo moved to Ankara due to maintenance problems.



Today, Gulhane Park is a popular park for both tourist and locals. The park covers a huge area. There are variety of very beautiful gardens, trees, pools and outdoor cafes with the impressive views of the Bosphorus.

Museum of the History of Science and Technology in Islam


There is also a Museum of the History of Science and Technology in Islam inside the Gulhane Park, situated in the former Imperial Stables Building in the park that worth a visit and see. The museum is a a unique one in the world, that visitors may see the the evolution of the different scientific branches in Islamic civilization.

The systematic presentation of the objects from the astronomy, geography, nautics, time measurement, geometry, optics, medicine, chemistry, mineralogy, physics, technics, architecture and military techniques in the museum shows the visitors that how crucial were the discoveries in the Islamic civilization and were transmitted in different ways to Europe, where they were adopted, assimilated and altered.

The museum is open every day between 09:00-18:00 and entrance fee is 12 TL (Muzekart+ is valid).

Where is Gulhane Park and How to Get There?


Gulhane Park is situated in between the Sirkeci and Sultanahmet neighborhood of Fatih district, in the Historical Peninsula of Istanbul. Getting to Gulhane Park is very easy that you may reach Gulhane Park via walking from Sultanahmet or from Eminonu and Sirkeci. The Bagcilar-Kabatas tram (T1 line) has a Gulhane stop. From the Asian side, you may take public ferries to Eminonu and from there, you may walk and take the tram to get to Gulhane Park.
